Becoming well informed and aware of one’s own body, including those of our families is becoming easier. Thanks to rapidly advancing science, never in history has the ability to dive deep into the micro world been at our fingertips enabling us to biohack our water.

By biohacking our drinking and showering water, we can easily test it, purify it, and add nutrients back for a better and more nourishing product.

Old technology- In my Army training days we had a constant need for purifying some of the most questionable sources of drinking water. We used purification tablets or 1-2 drops of bleach. Of course the bleach removed the bacteria but also introduced chlorine into the water. The good old water purification tabs were made of  iodine and killed bacteria and viruses. This purification method required you to wait up to 30 minutes before you could drink it. This stuff still works but is not practical for household use and who wants to be drinking water that tastes like chlorine or iodine?

Clean and toxin free water is not a given. It should be but it’s not. It is our responsibility to source our water as best as we can. It seems that fresh drinking water obtainability has been a problem throughout history. One of the reasons people used to drink so much alcohol is because they didn’t have access to fresh water. Each day we need a reliable source of water to do the most basic things like bathing, cooking and drinking.

The main consideration to keep in mind when drinking water is the source. If you simply drink from the tap then you risk ingesting toxins as most municipal water supplies are not that friendly.

Aging water pipes and chemical pollution are the main culprits when drinking unfiltered tap water.  Filtering water at the tap is the most economical and convenient method. There are many filtration systems on the market. I can only recommend the one that I have used for several years and will be mentioned in this article.

Plastic water bottles are not a good option.

Although hydration is an important matter, there is no one size fits all. Hydration needs fluctuate based on many factors like temperature, humidity, activity level, wellness level, body size and composition, food consumption, etc. I laugh when I hear it said or written that one must drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Does a five foot person need to drink the same amount as a six foot person?

Try and drink as much water as necessary based on how you feel. If you are not thirsty you probably don’t need to drink, just like eating. Go by your own natural instinct.

You do need to start with a clean and filtered water source and this is where we get into biohacking. There are so many filtration devices out there ranging from thousand dollar plus whole house systems to inexpensive countertop units. I think the charcoal filters used in many refrigerators do a fairly good job but don’t remove fluoride and chlorine. Having some type of water filtration is better than none.

My personal favorite and the one I recommend is the gravity-powered Alexapure countertop. I have been using this one for over three years on the same filter. The replacement filters are around $100 but are claimed to last up to 500 gallons. Mine has gone far beyond that and I have recently added a second cartridge to speed up the filtration process. This system uses a solid charcoal cylinder.

What about in the shower? Now that your drinking water is cleaned up, focus on what goes onto and into your skin. The same logic applies. Shower and bath filters work very well and are economical. This particular filter that I use has the added benefit of introducing vitamin c into the shower water. The addition of vitamin c is just a bonus since vitamin c is good for all your cells, but that is another post. I installed these on all my shower heads.

Have you heard of molecular hydrogen? Most haven’t yet but that will soon change. I have found that one of the best ways to hydrate is by drinking water that has been infused with hydrogen.

I predict that within 5 years, hydrogen based waters of varying flavors will be the norm in all gyms and fitness centers and perhaps much broader.

Once you have properly filtered your drinking water, it is time to add the super molecule known as hydrogen. Hydrogen is the lightest and oldest molecule, but until recently there was not a reliable way to generate a therapeutic dose of hydrogen without expensive equipment.

Molecular hydrogen tablets are one of the newest technologies to enter the health and supplement business. This is the true spirit of biohacking your water with a legitimate science based and natural approach without a bunch of marketing fluff and jargon.

Recent technology (last 10 years) has allowed this ancient molecule to be harnessed and put into a pill that diffuses a therapeutic dose of H2. It is sustainable, safe and economical.

We now have a better understanding of H2 which has enabled better and more economical ways to get the elusive molecule into our bodies using therapeutic doses.

My daily ritual the first thing after I get up and before I even have that first cup of coffee is to add 1 hydrogen tablet to 16 ounces of filtered water, wait two minutes and then drink the entire thing.

Hydrogen gas has long been used in the treatment of decompression sickness in deep sea diving. Only in the last 10 years has so much research gone into the many possible potential therapeutic uses for H2.

Humans need a certain amount of natural oxidation in addition to anti-oxidation. Molecular hydrogen acts as a modulator of the oxidant and anti oxidant activity going on inside the cells. It actually better enables or optimizes these processes. Because hydrogen molecules are so small, they can go anywhere.

Molecular hydrogen technology can rapidly produce up to 8 ppm of molecular hydrogen in 16 ounces of water, leaving behind 80 mg of elemental magnesium.

The benefits are too vast to list here but you can soon refer to my upcoming ebook, “Tiny But Mighty- The layperson’s guide to molecular hydrogen” and learn the details in a simple explanation of how this technology works.
